Why Organic

Organic and holistic farming

Visiting Sandy Creek Organic FarmOrganic food is about producing food through regenerative agricultural farming practices that only use natural substances and sustainable methods. This means avoiding all artificial or sythetic inputs that are harmful and toxic; chemicals, hormones, antibiotics or genetically modified organisms (GMOs). It is also about incorporating practices that use available organic resources such as mulch and natural fertilisers, pesticides, and fungicides, other pest and weed management by compliment planting, cover cropping, natural seasonally appropriate planting and organic soil development; all things are done in a way that is 100% non toxic, promotes biodyversity, is sustainable and enhances the soil environment as opposed to damaging it.

Organic food is GMO and chemical free. Organic farmers and producers at their core believe in being connected to nature in a way that utilizes it and protects it. Organic methods are practised more out of conviction that mere preference. True organic farming practice is highly ethical, sustainable and friendly to the local and wider environment and does not allow any form of GMO or artificial inputs for agricultural or animal farming. So, eating organic food ensures you are eating the most nutrient dense and clean foods - the farming methods are superior and wiser.

From a health perspective if you are not eating organic or ethically produced foods, you are consuming genetically modified foods and chemical residues which have been proven beyond refute to accumulate over time to contribute to many health issues.

AUTHENTIC ORGANICS VS CONVENTIONAL SUPPLY CHAINS

Organic food is good for you, good for farmers and good for the earth. The cost of certified organic food, in general, is a reflection of the real cost of real food. Whereas, conventional farming and mass produced foods in general do not reflect the real cost of food because the supply chains and distribution networks are manipulated by large players who are driven solely by profits - their strategy is based on controlling markets and all levels of supply chain whilst paying a carefully scripted lip service about their commitment to ethical business.  Think about this! Two groups own 70% of the retail and food chain in Australia; Coles (Westfarmers) and Woolies (Woolworths). In USA the biggest market share of the largest players combined is only 20% and in UK 48%.  The damage these do to Australian small business, our communities, our health and the environment is tragic. And then, there is how they affect consumer's choices. Check out these short videos exposing how Coles and Woolies wreck local businesses, hurt real communities, falsely promote themselves as good, and control supply chains. Supermarkets to Superpowers & Retail Mononpoly.

Authentic organic systems are completely opposite to these in every respect and any thinking consumer should give serious consideration to supporting organic suppliers and rejecting the false conventional food systems which are hurting us.

Conventional mass systems which generate retail sales are intrinsically linked to the growing and delivery of food, on scale.  They are therefore totally reliant on artificial inputs and GMO so they can feed their giant controlled markets. Labelling and marketing tactics designed to misinform or omit information is how the conventional system works to win customers, to keep them from being put off with facts about their food and the conventional system. Chemical inputs required to grow massive quantities of foods conventionally are exposed in the Monsanto Papers as well as the depth of infiltration into our supply chain and related interest groups from self-serving chemical giants. It shows how they work to dupe us consumers so they don't get sued for poisioning us, knowingly and so they can continue to exploit their markets.

Check out ROTTEN to see what is happening to conventional food! FOOD INC is another powerful documentary on conventional food systems.  'MARKETSPEAK' being implemented by conventional grocery marketers is captured in this short skit THE NATURAL EFFECT.

What is evident is this conventional food system hurts not only the ecology, but local economic systems, businesses and communities, whilst at the same time creating a hegemony over our choices. In order to achieve a perceived 'cheaper' and more 'perfect' and abundant product for consumers, 'marketspeak' is used convincing us we are getting more choices and better product and all the inputs are safe. The truth is consumers are getting less choice as well as inferior and more toxic products sold to them by fewer controlling distributors and by intentional misinformation to make it hard to get real information. The evidence is clear that conventional food systems are a false ecomony from every angle; personal health, communities, local business and the environment.

Your Organic Markets support and promote Australian certified organic because generally, it is ethical and fair, and reflects a set of values that are good for every element of society including food, business, communities, health and the environment. Certified organic provides a set of guidelines and standards to farmers and producers and it ensures integrity with official processes and accountabilty and regular auditing. We also recognize there are many farmers who are not officially certified organic, but are using authentic organic methods such as permaculture and ethical agricultural and animal farming and processing - these are conviction farmers. Authentic organic products, certified or not, should always be able to be verified as having integrity such as through official audit process, MRL reports (Maximum Residue Levels), labeling, and by transparent and ethical relationships with those involved in the supply chain.

Your Organic Markets as a certified organic operator looks for 'integrity' and 'authenticity' in  anything claiming to be 'organic'. Gimmicky market-speak is not a friend to those seeking authentic organics or truth.

Here are just a couple of the main reasons why supporting organic is wise:

  1. Nutritional value: Well-grown organic food contains more vitamins, nutrients and antioxidants than conventional food because it is grown in healthy, nutrient balanced soils.

  2. To protect furture generations:The food choices we make now, determine our children’s future health.

  3. Pay the true cost: By choosing organically grown and produced food you are paying for the true cost of food production now rather than deferring a cost which is ultimately paid by future generations.

  4. Organic tastes better: Organic farming starts with the nourishment of the soil, which leads to the nourishment of the plant and, produces tastier products.

  5. Chemical-free: Organic food is chemical-free making it the purest available. Did you know that around 400 different chemicals are registered for use on Australian farms and only a small number of these have been fully tested for their potential harmful properties?

  6.  Organic food is GMO-free: One of the fundamentals of organic farming is the belief in keeping in touch with nature. True organic farming practice does not allow genetically modified ingredients to be used. So, eating organic food is the best way to ensure that you are not consuming genetically modified foods.

  7. To protect our environment: Not only is organic food good for your body, but it's also good for the environment. Organic farming stimulates biodiversity, and without the use of herbicides and pesticides, wildlife is given a new lease of life. plus, there are no polluting chemicals.

  8. You pay now or you pay later: There are consequences to your health by the slow build up in your body of chemical residues from the synthetic inputs in conventional foods - investing in organic food now brings short and long term health benefits and saves paying later with more health breakdown and associated costs.

Both organic and biodynamic farming take place without chemicals or GMOs, and both practices place a high importance on soil health. Think of biodynamic farming as a type of organic agriculture, taking it a step further. The main principle of biodynamic farming is that the entire farm exists as a single entity without the need for outside inputs. In other words, where an organic farm may purchase organic seeds or organic feed for livestock, a biodynamic farm must produce everything on the property - it is a closed system. Biodynamic farming uses different principles that add vitality to the plant, soil and/or livestock, whereas traditional farming typically deteriorates the soil.
